Frequently asked questions
Aluminium is the most practical because it does not rust, needs almost no maintenance and is light, so it can stay outside all year. Synthetic poly-rattan on an aluminium frame lasts about five years in the sun without visible fading and is practically maintenance-free. Teak is the longest-lasting with care, since with yearly oiling it lasts for decades, but it turns grey and cracks if neglected, while plastic is the cheapest and shortest-lived.
On the coast aluminium leads because it does not rust and renews its own protective layer. Be aware that salt spray can cause fine corrosion on bare aluminium if the protective coating is scratched, so a quality coating is worthwhile and damage should not be left unprotected. Poly-rattan and good plastic are UV-stable, and the cushions and covers are the only part that really suffers from sun and salt, so choose outdoor fabrics and bring them in before rain.
For an uncovered terrace or garden choose synthetic poly-rattan, because it is water-repellent, UV-stable and frost-resistant, does not absorb moisture and does not rot. Natural rattan looks warmer, but outdoors it cracks, fades and goes mouldy from moisture and sun, so it belongs only in a covered, sheltered space. In shops a rattan sofa set almost always means poly-rattan on an aluminium frame, not real rattan.
Before winter clean the furniture, dry it well and store it in a dry place, a basement, garage or shed. Only steel and aluminium can safely stay outside. If there is nowhere to store it, use breathable protective covers and fasten them down well because of the wind. Always dry the cushions and covers and pack them away somewhere enclosed, because with proper storage they last several seasons instead of one.
First decide what the space is for, a corner for coffee and reading or for socialising and meals, because that determines the pieces. Measure everything, since the smallest table for a small balcony is about 60x60 cm, and a wrong dimension creates a cramped feeling. For small spaces choose folding and multi-purpose furniture, such as a bench with storage or a stool that is both a seat and a side table.
