Frequently asked questions
Start with the sofa set or sofa, because it is the biggest and most used piece and the rest of the room is planned around it. Then come the rug and coffee table, followed by the TV unit and shelves, while lighting and decoration are left for last. You do not have to buy everything at once. It helps to draw up a layout first and then furnish the room in stages.
First pick one focal point that everything turns around, usually the television or a window, and face the seating towards it. Place the largest piece, usually the sofa set, along the longest wall so the room feels more open, and leave about 45 cm between the sofa and the coffee table so it is easy to walk through. Choose a few larger functional pieces rather than many small ones that create clutter.
Choose the size according to the room and the number of people who sit there every day. A standard three-seater is about 2 m long, while large corner sofas go up to about 350x300 cm and need a more spacious room. Before buying, mark the footprint of the piece on the floor and check that it gets through the door and that there are at least ten centimetres or so left to the wall.
The rug should be big enough for at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs to rest on it, ideally with 20 to 30 cm of rug going under the seating. In larger or open-plan spaces the whole seating area can sit on the rug. Leave about 40 to 60 cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls.
Choose light tones for large pieces and furniture with visible legs that lifts off the floor, because that makes the space feel airier. Go vertical with shelves to free up floor space, and a mirror opposite the window bounces light back into the room. Pieces with built-in storage, such as an ottoman with a storage box, help keep everything tidy.
Most of the budget goes on the sofa set or sofa, while the coffee table, TV unit and shelves are considerably cheaper, and lighting and rug depend on your choices. The total depends a lot on materials and the class of the pieces, so the same type of furniture can differ in price several times over.
