Frequently asked questions
Custom kitchens are almost always priced per linear metre of units, and the price depends on the material of the fronts, the worktop, the number of drawers and the quality of the hardware. The price per metre usually covers the carcasses, fronts and basic hardware, while the worktop, sink and appliances are often charged separately. So before comparing, always check exactly what is included in the quote.
The space is measured and drawn to scale, with the ceiling height taken in several places because it often varies, and a check that the corners are square. The most important thing is to mark the exact positions of the electricity, water and drain, gas and the extractor outlet, because they determine where the sink, hob and appliances can go. Most stores do a free final measurement on site before making the kitchen.
The basic layouts are single-row, double-row, L-shaped and U-shaped, with the option of an island. The L layout uses a corner and frees up the middle of the room for a table or bar, so it suits most spaces. The U layout gives the most worktop and storage but needs a wider room, while an island goes with larger open-plan kitchens.
Leave about 25 to 30 cm between the seat and the underside of the worktop. A standard kitchen counter or island about 90 cm high takes a stool with a seat of about 60 to 66 cm, and a higher bar of about 105 to 110 cm takes a stool with a seat of about 75 to 85 cm. The most common mistake is buying tall bar stools for an ordinary counter, so if you are unsure, get a stool with adjustable height.
Chipboard is cheaper, easy to maintain and widely used, but it is weaker against moisture and the edge banding can come unstuck over time. MDF is denser, more moisture-resistant and can be milled and lacquered, so it is chosen for better quality and high-gloss fronts, at a higher price. A common practical combination is a chipboard carcass with MDF fronts.
From confirming the measurements and design to a fitted kitchen, it usually takes about six to eight weeks, depending on complexity, materials and how busy production is. Installing an average kitchen takes one to two days. So order the kitchen in good time, especially if you are planning to move in.
