Frequently asked questions
Start with the bed and mattress, because they are the basic pieces the rest of the room is planned around, and they affect your sleep the most. Then come the wardrobe and bedside tables, followed by the chest of drawers, while the rug, lighting and dressing table are left for last. Before buying, measure the room and sketch a layout with the door and window to check what fits.
The bed is most often placed with the headboard against a wall, so it can be reached from both sides, with at least 60 cm of walkway to the wall or wardrobe. The wardrobe goes along a free wall, and sliding doors save space because they need no room to open. Put bedside tables on both sides of the headboard and match their height to the top of the mattress.
Double beds in the region come in widths of 140, 160 and 180 cm, with a standard length of 200 cm. For two people 160 cm is the smallest comfortable width, and 180 cm gives the most room if the bedroom allows it. Besides the width of the bed, allow about 60 cm of walkway at the side.
A mattress should be neither too hard nor too soft, and you choose the firmness according to your body weight and the position you sleep in. Stomach and back sleepers usually do well with a medium-firm to firm mattress, while side sleepers prefer something a little softer so the shoulder and hip can sink in. For a mattress for two, choose according to the heavier person and, if possible, try it out in person.
For clothes on hangers a wardrobe needs a depth of about 60 cm, while a shelf for folded items can be about 40 cm. In smaller and narrower rooms sliding doors are more practical because they need no free space in front of the wardrobe. Always measure the width, height and depth of the wall and allow for the space needed to open the doors before buying.
Most of the budget goes on the bed with a quality mattress and on the wardrobe, while bedside tables and accessories are considerably cheaper. The mattress is often bought separately and can itself be a bigger expense, and custom-made furniture is usually more expensive than ready-made.
