Frequently asked questions
A table for six is most often 160 to 200 cm long and 90 to 100 cm deep, and a comfortable size is about 180x90 cm. The rule is to allow about 60 cm of table width per person. For four people a table of about 120 to 140 cm is enough, and for eight about 220 cm or more.
Leave at least 75 to 80 cm to the wall or other furniture so a chair can be pulled out and someone can sit down. If someone also needs to walk behind the seated people, allow 100 to 120 cm. In practice, a 180x90 cm table for six needs a clear zone of about 330x240 cm.
Allow about 60 cm of table edge per chair. A 120 cm table takes four chairs, 160 to 180 cm takes six, and 220 cm or more takes eight. A few centimetres can change the number of places, so always check the actual dimensions of the model before buying.
A round or oval table saves space, is easier to walk around and visually calms a small room, but its diameter limits the number of seats. A rectangular table gives more usable surface, can be pushed against a wall and suits larger households better. Match the shape to the shape of the room: rectangular for long and narrow rooms, round for small square spaces.
Everything does not have to be the same. It is enough to repeat details, for example the wood tone of the sideboard and the table, or the metal of the table legs and the chandelier. Stick to about three main colours and plan the dining room as a whole rather than piece by piece. A combination of wood and metal balances warmth and durability.
