How to choose a bar stool?
A bar stool is chosen above all by height, because a stool that doesn't suit the counter is uncomfortable to sit on however nice it looks. So measure the counter first, and only then choose a model. Here is what to look at before you buy.

Match the seat height to the counter
The key measurement is the relationship between the seat and the counter height. For a standard kitchen counter about 90 cm high you need a stool with the seat at about 60 to 65 cm. For a high bar of about 105 to 110 cm you need a taller stool, with the seat at about 75 to 80 cm. The easiest way is to measure the counter height and subtract about 25 to 30 cm, because that is the comfortable seat height.

Leave legroom under the counter
About 25 to 30 cm should remain free between the seat and the underside of the counter, so your legs fit comfortably. If the gap is smaller, your knees hit the counter, and if it is bigger, your feet can't reach the footrest and sitting becomes tiring. That is why stool height is always worked out for the actual counter, not guessed.

Allow about 60 to 70 cm per stool
So that elbows don't collide and everyone has their own spot, allow about 60 to 70 cm of counter width per stool. Divide the length of the counter by that number and you get how many stools really fit. For stools with armrests or ones that swivel, allow closer to 70 cm, because they need more room.

Check that it has a footrest
A footrest is not a small detail, it is what makes a bar stool comfortable. Without it your legs dangle and your back tires quickly. Check that the footrest bar is sturdy and at a good height, because it is used every time someone sits down.

Choose the back and material by use
If you sit at the counter for long, a stool with a back is more comfortable. If the space is small, a backless stool slides under the counter easily and stays out of the way. Since the counter is usually in the kitchen, choose a seat that wipes clean easily, such as faux leather, plastic or wood, and keep upholstered ones for a place where less gets spilled.
