How to choose dining chairs?
Dining chairs are chosen with your body, not just your eyes. When you sit at the table every day, comfort, height and durability matter more than looks. Here are five things to pay attention to, and when you're ready to choose, the whole range is one click away.
- 01
Match the chair height to the table
The key measurement is the gap between the seat and the tabletop. 28 to 30 cm is comfortable, just enough for your legs to fit under the table with your elbows above the top. For a standard table about 75 cm high, that means a seat about 45 cm off the floor. If you buy chairs separately from the table, check this gap first, because chairs that are too high or too low make a meal uncomfortable.
- 02
Sit on it before you buy
A chair is chosen with your body, not just your eyes. When you sit, your feet should rest flat on the floor and your thighs should be parallel to the floor. A gently curved backrest is kinder to your back than a flat decorative panel, and tub and half-armchair shapes are more comfortable because they spread the pressure evenly.
- 03
Choose the material by how much it will be used
If you eat at the table every day and there are kids in the house, choose easy-to-clean materials such as wood, plastic, faux leather or fabric with a protective coating. Upholstered chairs are the most comfortable for long lunches and conversations, but they need more care. A practical compromise is chairs with a soft seat and an easy-to-wipe back and legs.
- 04
Count the space per person
To keep elbows from bumping, allow at least 60 cm of table width per person. Before buying, measure the table width and divide it by 60, so you know how many chairs really fit, not how many you would like. Chairs with armrests need more room and often can't be pushed under the table, so choose them only if you have the space.
- 05
Check the construction and joints
A dining chair takes daily sitting, leaning and dragging, so stability matters more than looks. Grab it and rock it gently: a good chair is solid, with no wobbling or creaking and no visible gaps in the joints. Reinforcements between the legs (stretchers) and good quality wood mean a chair that lasts for years, not just one season.
