How to choose a child's bed?

With a child's bed safety comes first, and only then looks. The good news is that the rules are simple and easy to remember. Here is what to check, from the first bed to a bunk bed.

  1. 01

Choose the first bed by the child's size, not exact age

A child usually moves from a cot to a “proper” bed between the ages of two and three, or when they've grown enough to climb over the cot rail on their own (about 90 cm tall). The first bed should be low and have a guard rail along the side, to prevent falling out in their sleep.

  2. 02

A bunk bed's top bunk only from age six

The top bunk is only safe for a child of six or older. A younger child can use the lower bunk. If a child sleeps restlessly or sleepwalks, the top bunk is not for them.

  3. 03

Guard rails and gaps matter most

On the top bunk the rail should be on both sides and stick up at least 13 cm above the mattress. Gaps in the rail should be small (up to 9 cm), so a head can't get stuck. That is why a thinner mattress goes on the top bunk. A thicker one “eats” the height of the rail.

  4. 04

    Leave headroom

There should be at least 85 cm between the mattress and the ceiling, or between the lower and upper bunk, so the child doesn't hit their head when sitting up. Place the bed away from the window, and don't put anything next to it that the child could climb on.

  5. 05

Get a bed that “grows” with the child

Bunk beds that split into two separate beds, or models with drawers and an extra bunk, last longer and pay off. Also check that the mattress fits the frame exactly, with no gap that a hand or foot could slip into.
