How to choose a mattress?

You spend roughly a third of your life on a mattress, so this is not the piece to skimp on. The good news is that the choice isn't complicated once you know how you sleep and what bothers you. Here is what to look at.

  1. 01

Choose firmness by how you sleep

If you sleep on your side, a softer mattress that adapts to the shoulder and hip is better. If you sleep on your back or stomach, a firmer mattress is the better option because it supports the spine. Heavier people generally need firmer mattresses. If your back bothers you, a medium-firm mattress is usually the safest choice.

  2. 02

Pick foam, springs or a combination

Memory foam adapts to the body and absorbs movement, but it holds more heat. Pocket springs give better airflow and firmer edges. A hybrid mattress (springs plus a layer of foam) combines the support of springs with the comfort of foam. It is a good compromise when you're not sure.

  3. 03

If you sleep as a couple, look at motion transfer

When one of you turns over or gets up at night, a mattress that absorbs movement (foam or pocket springs) means it doesn't wake the other. Traditional interconnected springs carry every movement across the whole mattress.

  4. 04

Try it lying down, not with your hand

Labels like “medium” and “firm” are not standardised. The same description from two makers can feel completely different. Lie down for at least a few minutes in the position you actually sleep in. That is the only way to feel whether the mattress keeps your spine straight.

  5. 05

Quality pays off because a mattress lasts for years

A quality mattress lasts eight to ten years. Cheap, low-density foam starts to break down after just five or six years. Look at the foam density or the number of springs, not just the price.
