How to choose a bed?
A bed is bought for the long term, so before deciding it is worth measuring the room and thinking about what else you need besides a place to sleep, such as storage, height and a headboard. Here is what to look at.
- 01
Match the bed to the mattress
A bed is chosen by the size of the mattress. A single is usually 90×200 cm, a double is 160×200 cm, and for more room there is 180×200 cm. The bed frame is always a bit larger than the mattress because the headboard and edges take up space. So measure how much the whole bed takes up, not just the mattress.
- 02
Leave space around the bed
To walk past comfortably and open the drawers of a bedside table, allow about 60 to 70 cm on every side that is used. Before buying, look at where the door, window and radiator are. The bed must not get in the way of the door opening or cover a radiator.
- 03
Drawers or a lift-up bed if the room is small
A bed with drawers or a lift-up bed doubles the space for bedding and seasonal items without taking up any more room. Check how much storage there is and measure the boxes you plan to keep. A lift-up bed gives the most space, but it requires lifting the mattress from time to time.
- 04
Check the slats (the base)
A good base supports the mattress and extends its life. The gap between slats should not be more than about 7 to 8 cm. If it is wider, the mattress wears out over time, and some mattress makers void the warranty for that reason. More slats mean better support.
- 05
Choose the material and headboard to suit the room
Wood is warm and durable. Metal is lighter and cheaper, but it can creak if the joints are not tightened well. An upholstered headboard is comfortable for reading in bed, but it needs a bit more care. A tall headboard in a room with a low ceiling, or with a window behind the bed, quickly makes the room feel cramped.
