How to choose a kitchen?

A kitchen is made to measure and used every day, so mistakes here are felt for years. You don't need to be a pro. It is enough to measure the space well and think about how you move while cooking. Here is what to look at before you decide.

  1. 01

    Measure the space precisely

Since a kitchen is made to measure, everything starts with measuring. Measure the length of every wall and the height to the ceiling, then mark where the window, door, sockets, water supply and drain are. An error of a few centimetres can throw off the whole layout.

  2. 02

Lay it out around the “work triangle”

The sink, cooker and fridge form the triangle where you move most while cooking. When they are close but not crammed, cooking is faster and less tiring. Leave at least 110 cm of clear walkway in front of the units, and more if two people often cook at once.

  3. 03

Choose the cabinet material by budget and moisture

Chipboard and MDF are the most common and give a good balance of price and looks. Solid wood is the most durable, but also the most expensive. In a kitchen moisture resistance is especially important, so ask about the edge finish and the backs of the units, because that is where steam and water damage shows first.

  4. 04

Choose the worktop for toughness, not just colour

A worktop gets cut on, has hot pots put on it and gets spilled on, so look at how much it can take. Laminate is affordable and comes in many designs, but it is easier to damage with knives and heat. Quartz and granite cost more, but they are tougher and easier to maintain.

  5. 05

    Plan the storage in advance

Deep drawers instead of lower doors, corner pull-out mechanisms and tall units up to the ceiling make the best use of space. Before deciding, count everything that needs to fit, such as pots, appliances and groceries, and look for a kitchen that holds it.
