How to choose a wardrobe?

A wardrobe is chosen for decades and is hard to move once it's in place, so it is worth thinking ahead about two things: how the doors open and what needs to fit inside. Here is what to look at.

  1. 01

Choose sliding or hinged doors by the space

Hinged doors swing out into the room, so they need clear space in front. In a small room or near the bed they get in the way. Sliding doors take up nothing in the room because they run on a track, but you only ever see half of the wardrobe at a time, and they need slightly more careful handling.

  2. 02

Depth of at least 60 cm so clothes hang straight

A hanger is about 45 cm wide, so a wardrobe shallower than 60 cm means clothes hang at an angle and get creased. With sliding doors allow a centimetre or so more, because the track “eats” some of the depth. If there isn't room for full depth, shelves are a better option than a hanging rail.

  3. 03

Plan the interior around what you keep

Do a rough calculation: how much rail you need for long items (coats and dresses, about 150 cm of height), how much for short ones (shirts and trousers, about 100 cm), and how many shelves and drawers. It is better to plan ahead than to have everything end up in one pile later.

  4. 04

Leave space in front of the wardrobe

To get to it comfortably, allow about 60 to 70 cm of clear space in front. For hinged doors, also add the width they take up when open, and check that they don't hit the bed, a radiator or a window.

  5. 05

Check the mechanism and the edges

With sliding doors the quality of the track and wheels is the most important thing. A cheap track soon warps and the doors jump out. With any wardrobe, ask about the edge finish and the thickness of the back panel. A thin back warps quickly from moisture.
