How to choose a rug?

A rug can tie a living room together or look like a postage stamp in the middle of the floor. And the difference is usually just the size. Before you decide on a colour and pattern, sort out the measurements. Here is how.

  1. 01

A big rug unites the space, a small one “chops it up”

The most common mistake is a rug that is too small and looks like a postage stamp in the middle of the room. The rug should be big enough to tie the seating area together. The rule is that at least the front legs of the sofa and armchairs sit on it.

  2. 02

Choose the size by the layout, not the room

Two options work. The first is that the front legs of the whole seating group sit on the rug. The second is that, if the furniture “floats” in the middle of the room, the rug goes under all the pieces. Avoid having only the coffee table sit on the rug, with the seating around it.

  3. 03

Leave some bare floor around the rug

Leave about 15 to 45 cm of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls. That “frame” gives the room balance. A wall-to-wall rug feels like a carpet, and one that is too small looks like it wandered in by mistake.

  4. 04

Choose the pile height by who uses the room

A low to medium pile (the fibres of the rug) is the most practical. It is easier to vacuum, chairs and doors pass over it easily, and it collects less dust. A high, shaggy rug is soft and warm, but needs more care and gets in the way of chairs on castors.

  5. 05

Measure before buying and tape out the size on the floor

Before you buy, measure the space and mark the edges of the rug on the floor with masking tape. It is much easier to picture how a size really looks when you can see its edges than to guess in the shop.
