How to choose a dressing table?
A dressing table is the place for your daily routine, so it is chosen for comfort and lighting, not just looks. When the height, mirror and light are right, doing your make-up and getting ready is easy. Here is what to look at before you buy.
- 01
Choose a height of about 75 cm, like a desk
A dressing table is usually about 71 to 76 cm high, just right for sitting at comfortably like a desk. It goes with a stool or chair whose seat is about 25 to 30 cm below the tabletop, so about 45 to 50 cm off the floor. If you are taller, choose the upper end of the range so you don't have to lean toward the mirror.
- 02
The mirror should show your whole face and hair
When you sit, you should see your whole face and hair in the mirror without leaning. It looks balanced when the mirror is about two thirds as wide as the table. A tilting mirror is practical because it reduces glare and makes it easier to find the right angle.
- 03
Put the light at the side, at face level
The best light for make-up comes from the side and at face level, because light from above casts shadows under the eyes and chin. If possible, put the table near a window for daylight, but so that the sun doesn't hit the mirror directly. For artificial light choose LED in a neutral, daylight colour, ideally dimmable.
- 04
Choose the storage by how much you own
If you have a lot of make-up and small items, look for a table with drawers and dividers. Shallow drawers of about 10 to 15 cm are ideal for brushes and pencils, and deeper ones for a hairdryer and bigger things. It is better to plan the storage in advance than have everything end up on the tabletop.
- 05
Leave room behind the stool
Leave at least 60 cm free behind the stool so you can comfortably pull it out and sit down. Before buying, also check that the table doesn't get in the way of the room door or the wardrobe doors. Dressing tables range from narrow models for small rooms to wide ones with plenty of storage, so first measure the wall the table will go against.
